  • The two movies that put Johnny Depp at top of overpaid actors list

Johnny Depp’s had a bad year at the box office.

Depp was named Hollywood’s most overpaid actor of 2015 by Forbes after a string of box-office flops that returned just $1.20 for every dollar of the actor’s salary.

The “Pirates of the Caribbean” star, who has helped the Disney DIS, -1.11%  franchise rake in $3.7 billion world-wide, failed to find commercial success over the past year.

“Transcendence” in 2014 cost $100 million to produce but barely broke even when overseas figures are included. In the U.S., the film earned just $23 million. “Mortdecai,” another commercial flop, grossed $47 million world-wide on a production budget of $60 million. The film did worst in the U.S., bringing in a dismal $7 million.

Meanwhile, the flops weren’t reflected in Depp’s salary as the actor made millions off each film, reports Forbes.

To determine the ranking, Forbes examined return on investment from the actor’s last three films before June 2015, excluding animated movies, supporting roles and films that opened in limited release.

Forbes sees Depp rebounding over the next 18 months with two potential blockbusters on deck: “Alice Through The Looking Glass” in 2016 and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” in 2017. Forbes says it expects both films will help remove him from the overpaid actors list entirely.
