Asia stocks fall as hope for quick debt fix fades
(AP:BANGKOK) Asian markets headed lower Friday as European leaders haggled over a strategy to deal with the continent’s debt crisis once and for all.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 index fell less than 0.1 percent to 8,675.60. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was marginally lower at 17,977.12 and South Korea’s Kospi gained 1 percent to 1,822.84. Benchmarks in Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines fell while those in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore rose.
Thailand’s SET index fell 0.2 percent to 907.34 as the country’s capital Bangkok braced for the possibility that floodwaters from provinces to the north will defeat flood barriers and inundate the capital.
